Beach and Sea

Beach
Almost 90% of the outline of the island is sandy beach. Between the main jetty and the diving jetty is a stone embankment. You’ll find the finest and broadest parts of the beach on the right side of the main jetty up to the water-sports centre.

The beach near the deluxe rooms on the south-side of the island is much narrower. Groynes of stones strapped with gauze have been placed between each bungalow (of four rooms) to prevent the sand from being washed away.

The sand displaces with the current around the island. In certain weather conditions the sand on the south side of island is displaced to the north side, leaving the southern beaches with little sand. This happens usually in the rainy season. In the dry season the sand is moved the other way.

On some spots on the north beach the roots of some coconut palm trees become visible when the sand is washed away, generally indicating the beginning of the end for the tree in question.

The sand is almost white and very fine. In shallow water you can walk without the necessity of footwear, although coral is present in some spots. Watch out for coral pieces that are partly hidden under the sand after being washed ashore. It can be a rather painful experience when you step on these.

Sea
Fihalhohi has a house reef, which almost surrounds the entire island. On some spots the reef is located at a distance of 30 meters from the beach. The reef is easily accessible from all spots on the beach. El Nino has also caused much destruction in this area. At least 90% of the coral is dead. Every now and again, however, some beautiful pieces of coral can be admired.

Though the condition of the coral is bad, the beauty and variety of the fish will surprise you. You will see brilliantly coloured parrotfish (which you can hear nibbling in search of food), interspersed with yellow, blue, red- and black striped fish, as well as even-coloured and dotted fish. Small (eagle ray) and large (sting ray) rays, moray eels, lion fish and grey reef sharks have also been seen near the reef.
