Fun in the water

Swimming
The house reef around the island forms a natural safety barrier. The lagoon on the west-side is large and safe and you can wade in shallow water without the need of footwear. All this makes it an excellent spot to swim, also for children….

Snorkelling
The house reef of Fihalhohi is located only 30 meters from the beach in various spots on the north-side and is easily accessible from any place on the island.

Because of the danger of sudden strong currents, you are not allowed to snorkel around the whole reef. You are allowed to snorkel in a counter-clockwise direction from two buoys, near the former building of the diving-school to a buoy near the Blue Lagoon jetty. Nevertheless, the route has length of about 1000 meters.

Click here for the snorkelling route. This route is also displayed in the lounge and at the diving school.

On the right side of the main jetty lies a strip of sand with some beautiful coral pieces, including a fragment which is sometimes home to a moray eel. In this part of the snorkelling route the visibility is at its best. The sand has a steep downward slope as far as you can see. Farther to the right the slope becomes less steep and it becomes a bit deeper. Gradually you come across more and more coral, until you encounter the ‘wall’ on the north-east side. Here the reef is 5 - 8 meters high. While the reef continues past the Blue Lagoon jetty, you are not allowed to snorkel past this jetty.

Near the diving school, about 30 meters to the left of the diving jetty, lies a tube with a 15-cm diameter. Pulverised left-over food is pumped into the sea through this tube. Thus, at the end of the tube there is a great feeding frenzy of thousands of fish fighting over the food. It is definitely worth a visit. In between the two jetties you have a good chance of meeting two large stingrays. A moray eel regularly makes its home here as well.

In short: Fihalhohi has much to offer snorkelling fans....

Diving
The diving school at Fihalhohi is lead by Sabine Schroedl and Ralf Storch and is known for its quality. The diving school moved to a new building in August 1999. It is located near the old building of the school. Only equipment constructed with the most recent technology is used at this school. Instructions are given in four languages: English, French, German and Italian. Courses are given according to SSI and Padi standards.

It is a good place for the starting diver as the reef offers enough to explore. The slope on the right of the main jetty is also a pleasant way for the beginner to slowly get used to the depth.

For the experienced diver, however, Fihalhohi offers too little. Therefore, the diving school organises daily boat trips varying from 5 minutes away from the island (to the outside reef of the South Male Atoll) to 70 minutes away from the island to around 50 locations near inner and outer reefs. Amongst many other places, these daytrips take you to Veegali Bodu Thila, Vaagali-Faru, Lhohi Paradise, Guraidhoo-channel (Shark-Point), Rihiveli Wreck and Manta Point...
