Fihalhohi Tourist Resort

During your flight you are requested to complete two forms, which you have to show to customs upon arrival and departure. You will land at the Hulhulhe airport in the South Male atoll, near the capital Male.

When you leave the plane, the first thing you will notice is the high humidity of 85%. Yet it will not bother you during your stay as the climate is truly delightful. (You were looking for the sun, weren’t you?)

After going through customs you will arrive in a room filled with counters of various tour operator agencies. You will have to hand over your return flight ticket to the agency of your tour operator and will get a receipt in return. You will also receive some information from your travel agency on how to contact the agency as well as some general information about the island. (If you booked a charter-flight, you do not have to hand over your return flight ticket nor do you have to confirm your return flight)

Then you have to wait for the speedboat that will bring you to your island of dreams. You can wait at one of the bars near the exit of the building and have a drink. Bearing in mind that the Maldives have no beverage industries and that all drinks therefore have to be imported, will help you recover from the initial shock of discovering the steep price of your drink.

Depending on the type of speedboat and the weather, it takes one to one and a half hours to reach Fihalhohi. If you’re caught in a storm the trip will not only take longer, but will also prove a test of both balance and a strong stomach.

The transfer to and from the atoll islands only takes place in the daytime. If your flight has a serious delay causing you to miss your transfer you will be taken to another accommodation.

By this time you’ll have been travelling for quite a long time. Except for some airports in Germany and Switzerland, there are no direct flights from Europe to the Maldives, which means that you’ll have had at least on stop-over in Europe (unless you drove to the airport) before getting on your direct flight to the Maldives. The flight will have taken about nine hours, after which you’ll have had to wait at the airport for the speedboat to take you on the one to one and a half hour trip to Fihalhohi. So by the time Fihalhohi comes in sight you’ll have travelled quite a bit….

Upon arrival every guest is welcomed with a small refreshing towel and a coconut drink. In the lounge you will get your room key after you have completed a form. An attendant will take your luggage to your room. It is customary to give him a one dollar tip per suitcase.

You are expected in the reception or at the information centre at 18.00 on the day of your arrival, where you will receive information about the island, the resort and the Maldives.
